If you follow me on Instagram you surely saw some pictures of my trip in the region of Colmar for christmas markets. Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and of course Colmar: a small trip into Christmas magic that I wanted to share with you, as I am certain that lots of you guys love (authentic) Christmas markets.
Believe me, here you’re back to childhood, it’s real Christmas magic and enchantment, but not flashy: it’s authenticity that you seek when you come to Alsace.
Colmar Christmas market:
First of all, I discovered Colmar for the first time and I found it very beautiful: Tout d’abord, la ville de Colmar, que j’ai découverte à cette occasion, est vraiment superbe: colourful facades, houses from the past: a real feast for the eyes! There are 5 Christmas market in Colmar; among them there is one you shouldn’t miss if you come with children: it is made for them with nice carousels and a mailbox for Santa Claus! A walk through the “Petite Venise” and its canals on the Ill river, eat Bredele, pie and mulled wine, eat typical Alsacian food: pleasure is yours, believe me!
A tip if you come by car: you should park at the Exhibition Center. Free shuttle runs every 10 minutes to the city center: so great!
Riquewihr Christmas market:
More than 2 millions visitors come every year to Riquewihr! It’s so small, but it’s a real jewel: so magic! A mini charming historical city center, shops that kept the charm of yesteryear; some of them are real museums! I loved it.
Ribeauvillé Christmas market:
After the visit of Ribeauvillé, I found that there was little wooden chalets for the Christmas market. But festive mood is really good in this bueatiful town: people in costumes animate, I really enjoued walking through the city. A very warm and festive ride!
Informations: be careful Christmas market takes place only one week-end
Kaysersberg Christmas market:
One of the most authentic Christmas markets in Alsace; Kaysersberg even inspired Colmar Christmas Market! Kaysersberg is a really beautiful town.
Informations /Be careful, Kaysersberg Christmas market opens on week-end only!
Christmas markets I’m talking about here are really typical: you’ll found much food and Christmas craft. It has nothing to do with those you can find in Paris or Lyon for example: those have nothing “magic” and are much more the realm of bauble: they will seem very bland once you’ve visited those in Alsace…
What to do in the region apart visiting Christmas markets?
During the day you should visit winemakers if you like wine: Alsace is one of the most famous French wine regions. The towns I mentioned are on the wien route!
Visit the famous Haut Koenigsbourg castle: we were so disappointed about it. Perched on its eyrie, it is absolutely beautiful: we were more and more excited to visit it as we were approaching, under a magnificent sun. But as many people this day, we found (large) door closed once arrived: it is closed on monday during this period!
You should know that I booked our accomodation a few days before arrival and I was really lucky! It was almost fully booked everywhere. Yes, Chritmas markets in the region of Colmar attract many people!
I hope that my small journey inspired you: perhaps for next year?
Voilà, j’espère que mon petit périple vous inspire, peut-être pour l’année prochaine?
